Live-edge vase  made from local maple by Port Hawkesbury woodturner, Hugh Ross.

Because of climatic stress, the forests of Eastern Nova Scotia yield an abundance of wood with abnormal shapes, colour, grain and flaws. Ross’ goal is to give these abnormalities a second life by turning them into objects which are unique and beautiful.

Hugh Ross attended the University of New Brunswick, completing a degree in forestry, then moved to Port Hawkesbury to pursue a career in Industrial Forestry. Taking up woodworking as a hobby was a natural thing to do and Ross discovered his passion for woodturning. He finds it rewarding to start with a raw piece of wood and see it transformed into something beautiful and/or useful. Now retired, Ross has time to devote to woodturning and to make his work available to those who enjoy turned objects.
